Afternoon Tea Highlight of Malaysia-Singapore 60-Year Diplomatic Milestone

SINGAPORE – In a symbolic gesture reinforcing six decades of diplomatic partnership, the leaders of Malaysia and Singapore shared an afternoon tea during the 12th Malaysia‑Singapore Leaders’ Retreat, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two nations.

The tea reception, hosted by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong for the Malaysian delegation led by his counterpart Anwar Ibrahim, served as a cordial prelude to their formal talks and reflected the warmth of their personal ties, according to Anwar.

Earlier, at a joint press conference, Anwar noted: “I was touched when PM Lawrence expressed his appreciation for our personal friendship and the trust placed in us.”

He described the day’s discussions as “constructive” and aimed at charting a positive course for the future cooperation of both countries.

He also expressed gratitude for Singapore’s support of Malaysia throughout its 2025 term as Chair of ASEAN.

The retreat, held at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia, Singapore, convened senior officials from both governments to review progress on bilateral cooperation and map out future initiatives.

Among the key issues under discussion were longstanding regional matters such as airspace arrangements and maritime boundaries, as well as furthering collaboration in infrastructure, healthcare, and social welfare.

This year’s retreat carries particular significance as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Singapore.

The milestone was first acknowledged during the previous (11th) retreat earlier in 2025, where both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to elevating cooperation across various sectors including cultural exchange, social welfare, and community development.

By blending informal hospitality with high-level diplomacy, the afternoon tea underlined the leaders’ mutual commitment to preserving not only the formal aspects of bilateral relations but also the personal rapport that underpins collaboration.

As the retreat moves forward, both sides aim to build on this spirit of friendship and trust to deepen cooperation, resolve outstanding issues amicably, and enhance the shared prosperity of their peoples.
