Amanita Programme Empowers Women in Serian Community Safety

SERIAN – Women’s role in community safety has been further strengthened with the appointment of Kampung Pichin as the Serian District Amanita Adoption Park, recognising the active involvement of women in crime prevention efforts.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner of Police Dato’ Aida Abdul Hamid during the opening of Taman Angkatan Amanita (Sarawak Contingent Headquarters) at Away Gawai Tun Abdul Razak, Kampung Pichin.

She highlighted that women, particularly housewives, are vital partners of the police in safeguarding neighbourhoods.

“PDRM records show that 70 per cent of women in Malaysia are housewives. This makes them Police partners or known as ‘Engage Housewives in neighbourhood safety’, who are most suitable to help the police obtain information related to criminal activities in neighbourhoods,” she said.

Dato’ Aida noted that Kampung Pichin, the largest village in Serian District with 360 houses and a population of 3,000, was chosen due to the strong commitment of its women residents.

Their active participation in community programmes and close cooperation with the police were key factors in the selection.

She praised the women of Kampung Pichin for consistently organising initiatives that promote safety and awareness, reinforcing their role as strategic partners in crime prevention.

The Amanita Programme, also known as the Peace Lady initiative, was introduced in October 2021 to engage women in neighbourhood safety.

It provides training and exposure on personal and family security, raises awareness of domestic crime issues, and addresses threats within communities.

Dato’ Aida explained that the programme is designed to empower women as agents of change, ensuring they play a central role in building safer communities.

By involving women directly, the police aim to strengthen the community safety network and enhance trust between residents and law enforcement.

Also present at the ceremony was Tebedu State Assemblyman Dr. Simon Sinang Bada, alongside community leaders and police representatives.

The recognition of Kampung Pichin as an Amanita Adoption Park is expected to serve as a model for other villages in Sarawak, demonstrating how women’s involvement can significantly contribute to neighbourhood safety and crime prevention.
