KUCHING: Hundreds of locals and tourists turned up at the Kuching Waterfront on 7 March 2026 to enjoy the opening iftar of Ramadan when free food packs were distributed to the public.
Jointly organised by Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and Majlis Islam Sarawak, the event was held to unite communities in celebration for the holy month.
The event, which started at 4:30 pm, was attended by relatives and friends from the Petra Jaya area, Santubong, Demak Bako and Boyan.
Traditional fare such as bubur lambuk, bubur pedas, assorted kuih muih and bottled water were served to attendees. Iftar packs were also distributed free of charge so that everyone present could break their fast together.
Organisers noted that the programme was inclusive of all, whether observing Ramadan or not, and invited people to come in with their family and friends to soak up the celebratory ambience.
Held at the Waterfront, The event aspired to reflect both the cultural richness and spirit of inclusivity that Kuching embodies throughout Ramadan.
The initiative, officials from MDWS spoke to added, was not just about sharing food but also about strengthening ties of brotherhood and promoting harmony between different sections of society.
In line with DBKU, the Mayor of Kuching North has always been supportive of community-centred programmes that promote participation and appreciation of culture.
Events like this in Ramadan are viewed as important in fostering goodwill and strengthening Sarawak’s renown as a melting pot.
Residents said they appreciated the effort, adding that such initiatives make it easier to prepare meals while also providing a chance for social interaction. For many, the event was an opportunity to chat with neighbours and celebrate in a public space.
The organisers also pointed out that the free iftar packs are a tradition of giving during Ramadan since it embodies values where people share compassion and generosity with each other. They had also urged attendees to spread the positivity in community activities throughout the month.
Kuching Waterfront has been the favourite ground for cultural and social events, and the success of this programme is a good index of how it succeeds in becoming a meeting point for Kuching residents.
As Ramadan is still ongoing, DBKU and Majlis Islam Sarawak may announce more activities to further enrich the festive experience. The event ended with prayers and a sense of togetherness, unity and celebration.
