Anthropic Staff Reject Zuckerberg’s $100M Offers, Upholding Culture

In a rare talent‑poaching showdown, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei disclosed that his AI company’s employees have turned down reported $100 million overtures from Meta, leading to a defining moment in the escalating AI hiring wars.

Speaking on the Big Technology Podcast, Amodei explained that despite Meta’s aggressive recruitment tactics—including large signing bonuses—Anthropic refused to adjust its structured, level‑based compensation model. The policy prohibits negotiations on individual salaries to preserve fairness and equity internally.

Amodei emphasized that agreeing to such outsized offers would “destroy” Anthropic’s culture and undermine what he described as a mission‑driven workforce. “Some employees wouldn’t even talk to Mark Zuckerberg,” he said, highlighting a commitment that goes beyond monetary incentives.

Industry observers note that Meta is offering compensation packages exceeding eight figures, including $200M‑plus packages to top researchers, in an effort to build a “talent‑dense” AI superintelligence team. Yet Anthropic’s retention rate among recent hires reportedly stands at 80%, significantly higher than Meta’s 64%, a metric that underscores the strength of values‑based retention.

Anthropic cofounder Benjamin Mann and Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas echoed the importance of mission alignment. Mann said employees found the choice “not hard,” while Srinivas warned that financial incentives alone are often insufficient to retain top talent.

Amodei summed up the situation bluntly: Meta is attempting “to buy something that can’t be bought”—loyalty, purpose, and a shared vision that a pay cheque simply cannot secure.
