Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim joined the Malaysian delegation in performing Friday prayers at the Houghton Mosque in Johannesburg during his official programme in South Africa.
The visit, which took place on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit, highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening ties with the local Muslim community.
Anwar expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the mosque committee and congregation, describing the atmosphere as one of courtesy, respect, and brotherhood.
He noted that such closeness reflects Islam’s universal call for goodness, love, and unity across racial and national boundaries.
As a gesture of appreciation, the Prime Minister presented a specially printed copy of the Quran to the mosque, along with 24 additional copies of the English translation of the Quran with tajwid.
These were intended for use and reference by the Muslim community in Johannesburg, symbolising Malaysia’s dedication to fostering cultural and spiritual bonds.
“Such closeness reminds us that Islam always calls for goodness, love and brotherhood across racial and national boundaries,” Anwar remarked, underscoring the importance of nurturing ties that transcend differences.
The visit to Houghton Mosque forms part of Anwar’s broader diplomatic outreach in South Africa, where Malaysia is seeking to strengthen cooperation in areas such as halal certification, education, and cultural exchange.
His engagement with the local Muslim community complements Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair 2025, reinforcing the country’s image as a partner in both economic and spiritual development.
Observers note that Anwar’s symbolic donation of Qurans reflects Malaysia’s longstanding tradition of promoting Islamic values abroad while building bridges with Muslim communities worldwide.
The act also underscores Malaysia’s emphasis on faith-based diplomacy as a means of enhancing solidarity among Global South nations.
The Prime Minister conveyed his deepest appreciation to the South African Muslim community for their hospitality, expressing hope that the relationship will continue to flourish on the basis of kindness and the beauty of Islamic teachings.
