PM Anwar Meets Senators’ Council President on Governance Role

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was paid a courtesy call at the Parliament building by Malaysian Council of Senators President Datuk Seri Khairudin E.S. Abd Samad. The dialogue was focused on the Council’s role in enhancing governance and advancing Malaysia’s national development agenda.

The PM underscored the role of the Council of Senators in checking the quality of legislation. It ensures institutions build a solid legal base to preserve policies of the government, under the MADANI framework.

“We also discussed our perspective on what was the strategic function of DN in maintaining the quality of national laws so that policies from the government MADANI could be implemented based on strong legal ground,” said Anwar.

The Majlis Senator Malaysia (Malaysian Senate) consists of members appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the advice of the Prime Minister and hold office at His Majesty’s discretion. Formed to enhance the dignity of the Senate, the list is a forum for senators to advance democratic initiatives and legislative changes. It seeks to make democracy work by empowering it with the improved effect of national laws.

And the Dewan Negara, Malaysia’s own Senate, has 70 seats and acts as a reviewing chamber for legislation passed by the Dewan Rakyat. Senators serve for three years, with the opportunity of reselection. The assembly is vital to the polishing of laws and the preservation of quality in governance.

The Anwar-Khairudin meeting on the day of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia’s opening address to the Fifth Session of the 15th Parliament. The timing underlined the central role that parliamentary institutions play in determining Malaysia’s democratic edifice.
