KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a telephone conversation with United States President Donald J. Trump, focusing on regional tensions, bilateral relations and wider global issues of mutual concern.
During the discussion, Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s role in urging both Cambodia and Thailand to exercise restraint and return to dialogue through bilateral channels and ASEAN mechanisms.
He stressed that Malaysia remains ready to support efforts to de-escalate the situation, protect civilians and help restore stability in line with ASEAN’s spirit of good neighbourliness.
“As ASEAN Chair, Malaysia will convene a Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting soon to assess the situation and support de-escalation measures,” Anwar said, underscoring the importance of collective regional action.
The Prime Minister also conveyed his appreciation for the United States’ active engagement with ASEAN and the confidence placed in Malaysia as Chair of ASEAN 2025.
He noted that Washington’s involvement strengthens ASEAN’s ability to address challenges and maintain peace across Southeast Asia.
Observers point out that the Cambodia-Thailand border tensions have drawn international attention, with ASEAN expected to play a central role in facilitating dialogue and preventing escalation.
Malaysia’s leadership as ASEAN Chair is seen as critical in ensuring that the bloc remains united and proactive in addressing regional security concerns.
The conversation between Anwar and Trump also touched on bilateral relations, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to cooperation across economic and strategic areas.
Analysts suggest that Malaysia’s engagement with the United States reflects a broader effort to balance regional diplomacy with global partnerships.
The upcoming ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is expected to provide a platform for member states to coordinate responses, strengthen preventive measures and reinforce ASEAN’s role as a stabilising force in the region.
