PM Anwar Urges Works Ministry to Tackle Delays, Uphold Integrity

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on the Ministry of Works (KKR) to strengthen its oversight of national infrastructure projects, stressing the importance of accountability and integrity in ensuring timely delivery.

Speaking at the ministry’s Monthly Assembly, held for the first time with its staff, Anwar highlighted the crucial role of KKR as one of the government’s central pillars in translating development plans into tangible benefits for citizens.

He underscored that civil servants must remain closely engaged with communities to understand the realities of policy implementation on the ground.

The Prime Minister emphasised that contractors entrusted with public projects must carry out their responsibilities with professionalism and integrity. He warned against negligence and delays, noting that every setback directly affects the public’s access to improved facilities and services.

“There are dozens, hundreds, perhaps even thousands of projects across our country, and it is vital that we record their performance. If issues arise, do not wait for me to step in,” he said.

Anwar also urged ministry officers to monitor projects from the outset, including those managed at state level, and to conduct field inspections to identify challenges early.

He encouraged senior officials to provide opportunities for junior officers to share feedback, pointing out that local insights often reveal overlooked issues such as poor road conditions near new schools.

In addition to project management, Anwar raised concerns about the growing trend of glorifying individuals who offer bribes, warning that such practices undermine national progress.

He reminded civil servants that infrastructure is ultimately built to serve people, and that human values must not be compromised in pursuit of development.

The Prime Minister expressed appreciation to all KKR staff for their dedication and urged them to continue driving excellence.

He reiterated that infrastructure projects must be completed on schedule, with quality standards upheld, and with a clear impact on the well-being of Malaysians.

His remarks come amid broader government efforts to improve governance and efficiency across ministries.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil noted that Anwar’s reminder was directed at all ministries, urging them to ensure that future projects are planned thoroughly and executed with meaningful public impact.

By reinforcing accountability and integrity, Anwar signalled his administration’s determination to ensure that Malaysia’s development agenda is not only ambitious but also firmly rooted in transparency and responsibility.
