SEMATAN – A black velvet snake was successfully captured in Kampung Temaga Melayu, Sematan, following an emergency call made to the District Operation Control Centre (PKOD) on the morning of 8 May 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 9.00am when a resident discovered the reptile hiding beneath a used canvas behind their home.
Concerned for safety, the complainant immediately contacted the Civil Defence Force (APM) Sematan for assistance.
APM officers responded promptly to the call, arriving at the scene to secure and remove the snake. The swift action ensured that the reptile was safely handled without posing further risk to the household or surrounding community.
The black velvet snake, known for its distinctive dark scales, is among the species occasionally encountered in rural and semi-rural areas of Sarawak.
While not commonly seen, such snakes can cause alarm when discovered near residential properties. Authorities emphasise that immediate reporting is crucial to prevent accidents and to ensure professional handling of wildlife.
This case highlights the importance of community vigilance in Sematan, where residents are encouraged to remain alert and to contact emergency services whenever they encounter potentially dangerous animals.
PKOD and APM continue to remind the public that emergency calls should be directed to 999 for all urgent situations, including police, fire, medical, and wildlife-related incidents.
The Civil Defence Force reiterated its commitment to its guiding principle of “Ready, Fast & Integrity”, underscoring its role in safeguarding communities across Sarawak.
The successful capture of the snake reflects the effectiveness of coordinated emergency response systems in rural districts.
Local authorities also urge residents to take precautionary measures, such as keeping surroundings clean and avoiding clutter that may attract or shelter snakes.
Public cooperation remains vital in ensuring safety and preventing wildlife-related hazards in residential areas.
