MATU – A 1.5-metre-long crocodile was captured by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Kampung Jemoreng, Matu, on Tuesday, 3 November, after it became caught on a hook belonging to a local complainant.
The Matu District Civil Defence Operations Control Centre (PKOD APM Matu) received an emergency call reporting the incident and dispatched personnel to the location to attend to the situation.
Upon arriving at the scene, the responding team was directed by the complainant to the crocodile’s location. APM personnel subsequently managed to capture the reptile, which measured approximately 1.5 metres in length.
Following the operation, the crocodile was transported to PKOD APM Matu for further action. The brief incident report did not specify the reptile’s condition, the exact circumstances in which it became caught on the hook or what further measures would be taken.
The incident highlights the importance of reporting encounters involving crocodiles to the relevant authorities, particularly when the animals are found close to places where people carry out daily activities.
Crocodiles are part of the natural environment in parts of Sarawak, where rivers, waterways and surrounding habitats form part of the landscape. Encounters can occur in areas where human activities and wildlife habitats overlap.
Members of the public should remain cautious when near rivers and other waterways where crocodiles may be present. They should avoid approaching, attempting to handle or provoking the animals, even when a reptile appears to be trapped or unable to move freely.
Anyone who comes across a crocodile in a potentially hazardous situation should contact the appropriate authorities rather than attempting to capture or relocate it independently. Providing clear information about the animal’s location can also help response personnel assess the situation when attending a report.
For matters requiring assistance from the Matu District Civil Defence Force, members of the public can contact PKOD APM Matu at 084-832208.
The incident was reported by the Public Relations and Documentation Unit of APM Matu District. The operation concluded with the crocodile successfully captured and brought to the district operations centre for further action. — Sarawak Daily
