SEMATAN – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Sematan successfully destroyed a large wasp nest following an emergency call from the public on Tuesday evening.
At around 6.15 pm, the Sematan District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) received a report of a dangerous insect nest located on a tree near the Bukit Sematan Resort.
The complainant requested immediate assistance from APM Sematan to remove the threat, which was situated close to guest accommodation.
Upon arrival, the response team discovered a massive naning wasp nest, estimated to be the size of a vehicle tyre and positioned approximately 20 feet high in the tree.
Due to the potential risk posed to resort visitors, the team acted swiftly and destroyed the nest by controlled burning.
The operation was carried out under strict safety procedures to ensure that no harm came to the public or the responding officers.
The destruction of the nest prevented possible injuries, as wasp stings can cause severe reactions, particularly among individuals with allergies.
APM Sematan emphasised that their readiness, speed, and integrity remain central to their mission in safeguarding communities.
The incident also highlighted the importance of public vigilance in reporting hazards that could endanger lives.
Resorts and recreational areas in Sarawak often face challenges from wildlife and insects due to their proximity to natural habitats.
Authorities have reminded residents and visitors to remain cautious and to immediately contact emergency services if they encounter similar situations.
The Civil Defence Force continues to play a crucial role in protecting both locals and tourists in Sematan. Their responsibilities extend beyond disaster response to include environmental hazards such as dangerous insects and wildlife.
This latest case demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated emergency action and the importance of community cooperation in maintaining safety.
The successful destruction of the wasp nest at Bukit Sematan Resort reflects the ongoing commitment of APM Sematan to ensuring public wellbeing across the district.
