SEMATAN – The Sematan District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) received an emergency call on the evening of 27 April 2026 regarding a snake sighting in a residential area. The report, logged at 6.36pm, involved a black-headed snake discovered inside a pipeline.
Following the alert, the complainant contacted the Civil Defence Force (APM) in Sematan for immediate assistance.
The case was categorised as a snake-catching operation, known locally as KMU, and was treated as a priority due to the potential risk posed to residents.
APM officers from Sematan and neighbouring Lundu were mobilised to the scene to secure the reptile and ensure public safety.
The swift response reflects the coordination between local emergency services and community members in handling wildlife-related incidents.
Snake encounters are not uncommon in rural and semi-urban parts of Sarawak, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when reptiles seek shelter in man-made structures.
Authorities have consistently reminded the public to remain vigilant and to avoid attempting to capture snakes without professional assistance.
The Civil Defence Force has emphasised that community cooperation is vital in preventing accidents. Residents are encouraged to report sightings promptly and to provide accurate information to aid response teams.
In this case, the complainant’s quick action allowed officers to intervene before the situation escalated.
Wildlife experts note that snakes play an important role in maintaining ecological balance, but their presence in residential areas can lead to dangerous encounters.
Public awareness campaigns have been carried out across Sarawak to educate communities on safe practices when dealing with such incidents.
The Sematan case highlights the importance of preparedness and the role of emergency services in safeguarding communities.
It also underscores the need for ongoing collaboration between local authorities, wildlife agencies, and residents to manage human-wildlife interactions responsibly.
As Sarawak continues to expand its urban and rural infrastructure, encounters with wildlife are expected to remain a challenge.
Authorities are working to strengthen response mechanisms and to promote greater awareness of environmental safety.
The successful handling of the Sematan incident demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated emergency response and reinforces the message that public safety remains a top priority.
