KUCHING: Tegkang, a Malaysian film spotlighting the mysterious traditions of a village in Bario, Sarawak, has brought home the prestigious Best New Filmmaker Award from the First-Time Filmmaker Showcase in London. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for Malaysia’s film industry, bringing international recognition to the unique cultural heritage of the highlands.

The Lift-Off Global Network, known for nurturing emerging talent, hosted the award event as part of its Lift-Off Sessions at the iconic Pinewood Studios on September 18. Written and directed by Josh Nawan, Tegkang explores life in a remote Kelabit village, where a long-held secret begins to unravel following the arrival of a visitor who forms a connection with a local girl. The film’s narrative, set against the backdrop of Bario’s scenic highlands, delves into the rare cultural rituals and traditions of the Kelabit community, showcasing their way of life seldom seen by outsiders.

Director Josh Nawan expressed his gratitude, describing the win as a proud moment for Malaysia and, specifically, for the Kelabit people—a community from the Sarawak highlands. “This recognition not only honours our heritage but brings a story so deeply rooted in the Kelabit culture to global audiences,” he said.

The film’s producer, Lyn Nasihin, shared similar sentiments, hoping that Tegkang will attract more international attention to the diverse and vibrant narratives emerging from Malaysian cinema. “It’s an exciting time for Malaysian filmmakers, and we’re honoured to contribute to the growth of our film industry on a global stage,” she added.

The Lift-Off First-Time Filmmaker Sessions serve as a platform for independent filmmakers to gain exposure, with opportunities to present future projects at the renowned Pinewood Studios. This monthly showcase brings together a global audience, helping filmmakers reach new viewers and connect with industry professionals.

With Tegkang winning such a notable award, it is hoped that Malaysia’s unique stories will continue to captivate international audiences, celebrating the richness of our local culture and filmmaking talent.
