BETONG – The first phase of the Bakong Swamp Road and Debak Line upgrade project in Betong Division has been fully completed, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s ongoing infrastructure development efforts.
The project, carried out under the People’s Project Programme, was officially completed on 7 April 2026. It involved the upgrading of approximately six kilometres of existing dirt roads into stone-paved roads, providing a safer and more durable route for local residents.
In addition to road improvements, the scope of works included the construction of three new reinforced concrete box culverts.
These structures are designed to improve drainage and reduce the risk of flooding, ensuring that the upgraded road remains accessible during adverse weather conditions. The project also involved raising existing road embankments to enhance safety and resilience.
Officials from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) highlighted that the completion of Phase 1 is expected to deliver long-term benefits to the surrounding communities.
Improved road conditions will not only provide safer and more comfortable travel but also support socio-economic growth by facilitating better connectivity between villages and towns.
Local residents are anticipated to benefit from reduced travel times, improved access to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities, as well as enhanced opportunities for economic activities.
The upgraded road is also expected to encourage greater mobility and strengthen community ties across the division.
The Bakong Swamp Road and Debak Line project reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to rural development, ensuring that infrastructure improvements reach communities in both urban and interior areas.
By investing in durable and high-impact projects, the state government aims to create a more inclusive and balanced development framework.
Phase 1 completion sets the stage for subsequent phases, which will continue to expand and strengthen the road network in Betong Division.
The initiative underscores the government’s dedication to delivering quality infrastructure that directly improves the lives of the people.
