BARIO – A series of infrastructure projects worth millions of ringgit are underway in Bario, aimed at improving access, safety, and facilities for the local community, particularly the elderly.
The initiatives form part of the Coastal Aging Transformation Programme (RTP), which seeks to enhance quality of life while supporting economic growth in rural areas.
The most significant development is the construction of a stone fence from Pa Remapuh A to Bario Asal, valued at RM740,000.
Work began on 28 February 2026, with the project designed to improve connectivity and provide safer passage for residents. The fence is expected to serve as a long-term solution for community access, especially for elderly users.
Other projects include the upgrading of facilities in Kampung Padang Pasir, where RM80,000 has been allocated to strengthen community cooperation and improve local amenities.
Additionally, a RM200,000 project is being implemented to enhance access to the Nursery KEMAS Padang Pasir, supporting educational development and increasing opportunities for teachers and students.
Further investment has been channelled into Kampung Baru, where a road project worth RM900,000 is being carried out to improve mobility.
Although challenges have been reported, the initiative remains a priority for local leaders, with efforts focused on ensuring completion and community benefit.
Datuk Gerawat Gala, Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Office, highlighted the importance of these projects in driving rural development.
He noted that infrastructure improvements not only raise living standards but also create economic opportunities and strengthen social connections.
“Infrastructure installation improves the quality of life of the community, creates economic opportunities, and accelerates development,” he said.
Community leaders also emphasised the symbolic value of projects such as the walkway from Padang Bilun Bario to the Memorial Monument, which reflects the area’s cultural heritage while improving accessibility.
The initiatives are part of a broader agenda to ensure inclusivity in rural development, with particular attention given to the needs of the elderly.
Local representatives expressed gratitude to contractors, agencies, and community members for their cooperation in advancing Bario’s development agenda.
The projects demonstrate Sarawak’s commitment to rural transformation, ensuring that even remote communities benefit from modern infrastructure and improved access.
With continued collaboration, Bario is expected to see long-term gains in both social and economic development.
