KUCHING, Jan 2 – The Batang Lassa Bridge, now illuminated with dazzling lights, has become a source of pride for local residents. This monumental project, which spans 2.43 kilometers across the Batang Lassa River, is Sarawak’s second-longest river-crossing bridge. Despite being fully constructed at an impressive cost of RM600 million, its opening was recently delayed due to pending electrical connection works.
Sarawak Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Exco member Mohd Faizal Jamiludin shared a photo of the brilliantly lit bridge, sparking excitement among the public. The project is a testament to the Sarawak government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure for the state’s development.
Daro Assemblyman Safiee Ahmad confirmed that the delay in the bridge’s pre-inauguration, initially scheduled for Dec 31, occurred because Sesco was finalizing the electrical setup. “The electricity connection has now been completed, and the bridge is ready for use,” Safiee assured.
He also mentioned that discussions with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) are underway to confirm the pre-launch date. The official inauguration is slated for Feb 22, 2025, to be officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Safiee emphasized the transformative impact of the bridge, particularly for Daro’s economic growth in agriculture and fisheries. Local residents have lauded the project as a milestone for the community.
Jelani Matusin, 65, a resident of Pulau Bruit, expressed his joy: “Before this, we depended on rivers and the sea for transport. Now, this bridge is a dream come true for us.”
