The 4.8-kilometre structure, recognised as the longest river bridge in Malaysia, will replace the long-standing Triso ferry service and provide faster, more reliable travel across the region.

The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, described the event as historic, noting that the bridge will ease journeys during festive seasons such as Hari Raya Haji and Gawai.

“Tomorrow, Sarawak will witness a historic moment with the opening of Batang Lupar Bridge No. 1 in Sebuyau. With this bridge, the people can easily return home in conjunction with the Hari Raya Haji and Gawai celebrations. No more waiting for ferries,” he said during the closing of the First Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly.

The Premier highlighted how improved connectivity has transformed travel times across the state. Routes that previously required six to seven hours can now be completed in significantly less time. He illustrated this by saying, “Now we can go to Simanggang, have breakfast there and return to Kuching for lunch.”

The Batang Lupar Bridge is part of a wider infrastructure push under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP), which includes the construction of 21 major bridges and strategic road networks.

These projects form part of the Coastal Road Network Connectivity Programme and the Second Trunk Road initiative. To date, 10 bridges have been completed, replacing six ferry services, while another eight are expected to be operational by the end of the year.

Beyond immediate travel benefits, the Premier emphasised the broader economic impact of these projects. Enhanced road and bridge networks are expected to stimulate local economies by improving access to markets, services, and development opportunities.

He noted that infrastructure expansion is central to the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which aims to ensure that all communities benefit from improved connectivity.

The Premier reaffirmed the commitment of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government to continue investing in infrastructure that supports the well-being of the people.

“Every road that is completed, every bridge that is opened, and every communication network that is created are proof of the commitment of the GPS government in ensuring that the well-being and prosperity of the people are maintained,” he said.

The opening of Batang Lupar Bridge No. 1 is expected to significantly reduce travel bottlenecks, enhance safety, and provide a more efficient link between rural and urban centres.

It also symbolises Sarawak’s determination to modernise its transport system and strengthen its role in Malaysia’s broader development agenda.
