KUCHING – The unveiling of Wisma Elica has been hailed as a significant indicator of robust private sector faith in Sarawak’s economic trajectory. The state premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, presided over the official opening ceremony on 28 July 2026, positioning the new development as a cornerstone in the region’s ongoing modernisation efforts.
The complex serves as the home for VOCO Kuching by IHG and the K Care Collective, marking a notable addition to the city’s hospitality and healthcare landscape. During his address, the premier emphasised that the project was not merely a construction achievement but a tangible symbol of optimism regarding the state’s future prospects.
He extended his congratulations to Dato’ Bobby Ting, his family, and the Board of Directors of Elica, alongside partners from IHG Hotels & Resorts, consultants, and contractors for their collaborative effort in realising the vision.
According to the head of the state government, the willingness of private enterprises to commit capital to Sarawak reflects a broader confidence in the local economy. He noted that such investments are crucial for creating new opportunities and contributing meaningfully to long-term regional development.
The opening ceremony underscored the administration’s focus on transforming Sarawak into a preferred destination for both international investment and high-quality tourism.
To support this transformation, the government has prioritised the enhancement of world-class infrastructure. A key component of this strategy is the improvement of public transport networks, including the introduction of the hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system.
This initiative aims to boost connectivity while simultaneously reinforcing the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The premier argued that developments like Wisma Elica would work in tandem with these infrastructural upgrades to elevate the overall experience for visitors and residents alike.
Connectivity remains a central pillar of Sarawak’s growth strategy. Following the acquisition and restructuring of its airline, AirBorneo, the state is actively expanding its aviation network.
While current services cover domestic routes and Singapore, plans are underway to extend reach to other ASEAN nations as well as East Asian markets, including Japan and South Korea.
The Premier highlighted that improved accessibility would be instrumental in driving tourism, facilitating trade, and attracting further foreign direct investment.
In addition to transport, the state is positioning itself as a regional hub for medical tourism and retirement living. Several advanced hospitals are currently under construction, complemented by upgrades to existing healthcare facilities.
These enhancements are designed to provide comprehensive medical services for both the local population and international patients. The availability of quality accommodation and hospitality services, such as those offered at Wisma Elica, is seen as vital to supporting this long-term visitor demographic.
On the topic of technological advancement, the Premier encouraged local businesses to integrate artificial intelligence into their operational frameworks. He suggested that AI could significantly aid in planning and decision-making processes.
However, he issued a caution against over-reliance on automated systems. He stated that while technology facilitates calculation and forecasting, human judgement remains indispensable. Leaders must critically assess data provided by AI rather than accepting it without scrutiny.
The financial capacity to drive these ambitious projects stems from Sarawak’s strengthened fiscal position. The Premier revealed that annual state revenue has approximately doubled during his tenure, rising from RM7 billion to roughly RM14 billion.
This increase has enabled substantial reinvestment into critical sectors such as transportation, water supply, energy, and strategic connectivity. These foundational investments are intended to sustain economic growth and improve the general quality of life for citizens.
Concluding his remarks, the premier reaffirmed the importance of human capital development. He cited the state’s initiative providing free tertiary education to eligible students as a key component of long-term strategy.
By fostering a skilled workforce and maintaining strong collaboration between the public and private sectors, Sarawak aims to accelerate its economic transformation. The official declaration of Wisma Elica being open marks another step forward in this comprehensive development agenda.
