KUCHING – The Batu Kawa Riverbank Project by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has received international recognition after being awarded the Highly Commended Award under the Sustainable Urban and Built Environment category at the International Academy Awards 2026.

The award was presented during the International Academy Awards & Gala Dinner held at the Pullman Hotel Kuching on 1 October 2026.

The event was organised in conjunction with the 15th Design & Health World Congress and Exhibition, bringing together professionals and stakeholders connected with design, health and the built environment.

The recognition highlights the Batu Kawa Riverbank Project as an example of an urban development initiative that places emphasis on sustainability and the improvement of public spaces.

For MPP, the award represents another milestone in its efforts to support sustainable development within its administrative area while creating spaces that can benefit the wider community.

Riverbank areas can play an important role in urban environments by providing public spaces while contributing to the overall character and liveability of surrounding neighbourhoods.

The Batu Kawa project forms part of efforts to improve the quality and usability of public areas, with the recognition reflecting the project’s approach to sustainable urban and built environment principles.

The Highly Commended Award also places the project within an international awards setting focused on design and health-related considerations in the development of the built environment.

MPP’s recognition comes as local authorities continue to place greater attention on the quality of public spaces and the role of urban planning in supporting community wellbeing.

Well-designed public areas can provide opportunities for recreation, community interaction and outdoor activities while contributing to a more attractive urban environment.

The project also demonstrates the role of riverfront areas in urban development, particularly when improvements are planned with consideration for sustainability and community use.

The award ceremony at Pullman Hotel Kuching formed part of the broader programme surrounding the 15th Design & Health World Congress and Exhibition.

The international recognition provides MPP with an opportunity to showcase its work in sustainable urban development while reinforcing its focus on creating public spaces that respond to community needs.

For residents and visitors, improved riverbank environments can contribute to the overall experience of an area and provide additional spaces for public use.

MPP’s continued emphasis on sustainable development and liveable environments reflects the importance of integrating environmental, social and urban considerations into local projects.

The Batu Kawa Riverbank Project’s latest recognition therefore marks a further achievement for MPP as it continues efforts to enhance public spaces and support sustainable development for the community. – Sarawak Daily
