BAU – A fatal accident occurred at kilometre 2.0 of the Bau–Kuching Road near the entrance to Kampung Buso on 1 May 2026, claiming the life of a local motorcyclist. The incident was reported to Bau District Police Headquarters at around 9.30 pm.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the collision involved a car driven by a local man and a motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction.
Police believe the accident happened when the car driver attempted to overtake another vehicle but failed to avoid the oncoming motorcycle.
The motorcyclist sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Bau Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts by medical officers, he was pronounced dead while receiving care.
Authorities noted that the road surface was wet and slippery at the time of the incident, which may have contributed to the crash.
Bau District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Haide bin A. Rahman confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. He emphasised that police will continue to act firmly against traffic violations that put lives at risk.
In his statement, Superintendent Mohd Haide urged all road users to comply strictly with traffic regulations and avoid overtaking in high-risk areas, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
He highlighted that wet and slippery roads significantly increase the danger of accidents, making caution essential for drivers and motorcyclists alike.
The Bau District Police Headquarters has appealed to members of the public who may have information related to the incident to assist in the investigation. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Bau IPD Traffic Police Station directly.
This tragic case underscores the importance of responsible driving and adherence to traffic laws. Authorities continue to remind motorists that reckless manoeuvres not only endanger their own lives but also those of other road users.
With enforcement and public cooperation, police hope to reduce the frequency of such fatal accidents on Sarawak’s roads.
