BAU – A 14-year-old boy tragically lost his life after drowning in Sungai Staat, Kampung Segubang, on 21 April 2026.
According to Bau District Police, the teenager had gone to the river with friends for recreational activities. He was later reported missing after failing to resurface while bathing in the water.
Search and rescue operations were immediately launched, involving personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department alongside local villagers.
After several hours of effort, the victim was discovered at the bottom of the river. Medical officers at the scene confirmed his death.
Police investigations revealed no criminal elements in the case, which has been classified as Sudden Death (SDR).
Authorities highlighted that the incident underscores the risks associated with swimming in rivers, particularly those with strong currents or unpredictable conditions.
Community leaders and police have urged the public to exercise caution when engaging in recreational activities at rivers and waterfalls. They stressed that close supervision of children is essential to prevent similar tragedies.
The Bau District Police expressed condolences to the victim’s family, acknowledging the grief faced by the community.
Officers reiterated their commitment to raising awareness about water safety and encouraging vigilance among residents.
This incident adds to a series of water-related accidents reported in Sarawak in recent years, prompting renewed calls for safety measures and public education.
Authorities continue to remind families that rivers, while popular for leisure, can pose hidden dangers if precautions are not taken.
