Bau to Become UNESCO Global Geopark Within Two Years

BAU, 15 May 2025 – Sarawak is setting its sights high as the state government aims to nominate Bau District as a UNESCO Global Geopark Site within the next two years. This was announced by Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg, during the 205th Bau District Anniversary Celebration, Tasik Biru Festival 2025, and the launch of Tasik Biru Resort City today.

In his speech, the Premier said Bau has already achieved recognition as a National Geopark and the next goal is to elevate it to international status under UNESCO. “Bau is now part of the National Geopark. In two years, we want to list this national geopark as a UNESCO Site. Preparations are already underway, and this means Bau will soon be recognised globally,” he said to a crowd of thousands.

He stressed that preserving geological assets while ensuring sustainable development remains a key focus. He also highlighted the need for balanced growth between infrastructure and human capital development, especially among youth in the Bau District.

The Premier proudly noted that Sarawak currently generates over RM15 billion in annual income, a result of strong governance, hardworking citizens, and political stability. “Sarawak is progressing. We must defend our rights and ensure unity and good politics to continue thriving,” he said.

The launch of Tasik Biru Resort City marks another milestone in Bau’s transformation into a tourism powerhouse, showcasing its unique natural beauty, culture, and heritage. With new facilities and attractions, the government aims to attract both domestic and international tourists.

Several key figures were also in attendance, including YB Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, YB Dato Henry Harry Jinep, local leaders, and entrepreneurs, all showing strong support for the state’s vision for Bau. – Sarawakku
