BAU – Police in Bau have arrested a 23-year-old local man suspected of attempting to steal electrical wires from a building in the Golden Square area.
The suspect was taken into custody at around 7.30pm on 16 April after surrendering himself at the Bau District Police Headquarters, accompanied by his father.
Investigations revealed that the man allegedly tried to remove wires from the building’s main switch before fleeing when members of the public noticed the incident.
He later went into hiding and is believed to have stayed in Kuching for several days before returning to Bau.
Police confirmed that the suspect has a prior criminal record linked to drug offences. He is currently being detained to assist with further investigations under Section 431A of the Penal Code, which covers offences related to tampering with public infrastructure.
Bau District Police Chief PISUPT Mohd Haide bin A. Rahman stated that the authorities will not tolerate criminal activities that threaten public order.
He urged residents to avoid involvement in unlawful acts and encouraged the community to continue providing information to the police to help combat crime in the district.
The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to maintain safety and security in Bau, particularly in areas where public utilities and infrastructure are vulnerable to theft or damage.
Police reiterated their commitment to taking firm action against offenders to ensure the wellbeing of the community.
