BINTULU – The Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) has continued its tradition of engaging with the local community during Ramadan through the annual Sungkei Ceremony, held at the At-Taqwa Mosque in RPR Sibiew.
The event, officiated by YB Iskandar Turkee, State Assemblyman for Jepak, brought together residents, religious leaders, and community organisations in a spirit of unity and reflection.
The ceremony highlighted BDA’s commitment to fostering closer ties with the people of Bintulu while supporting institutions that play a vital role in social and spiritual development.
As part of the programme, donations were presented to several organisations, including the At-Taqwa Mosque, Madrasah At-Taqwa, and PPDK OKU Gemilang Jepak Bintulu.
These contributions are intended to strengthen community facilities and provide assistance to groups in need, particularly those supporting education and individuals with disabilities.
Following the official proceedings, attendees joined in congregational prayers, beginning with Maghrib, continuing with Isyak, and concluding with Tarawih.
The evening ended with a memoreh session, where participants shared food and conversation, reinforcing the sense of togetherness that Ramadan encourages.
The Sungkei Ceremony is part of BDA’s wider initiative to engage with residents during significant cultural and religious occasions.
Ramadan, a month of fasting and reflection for Muslims, is often marked by communal gatherings that emphasise charity, solidarity, and spiritual renewal.
Community leaders have noted that such events not only provide immediate support through donations but also help strengthen long-term relationships between government agencies and the people they serve.
By involving mosques, schools, and welfare organisations, the ceremony reflects a holistic approach to community development.
The presence of YB Iskandar Turkee underscored the importance of government representatives being actively involved in local initiatives.
His participation highlighted the role of elected officials in ensuring that development efforts remain closely aligned with the needs of the community.
Residents expressed appreciation for the support provided, noting that the donations would help sustain programmes and facilities that benefit the wider population.
The inclusion of organisations such as PPDK OKU Gemilang Jepak Bintulu also demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that vulnerable groups are not left behind in community development efforts.
The BDA Sungkei Ceremony has become a recognised annual event in Bintulu, symbolising the authority’s dedication to both physical development and social wellbeing.
As Ramadan continues, the ceremony serves as a reminder of the values of compassion, generosity, and unity that underpin community life in Sarawak.
