Man Dies After Boat Capsizes at Beladin Regatta

BELADIN – A festive regatta event in Beladin turned into tragedy when a 32-year-old man drowned after the racing boat he was rowing capsized during the Beting Maro Carnival at Sungai Batang Saribas yesterday evening.

Betong District Police Chief, DSP Rejali Angong, confirmed that the incident occurred around 3.50pm and was reported to the Beladin Police Station shortly after.

“Initial investigations revealed that the victim, who was one of the boat rowers, suddenly drowned when the boat sank mid-race. Rescue efforts were carried out immediately at the scene, but unfortunately, the victim could not be saved,” he said in a media statement today.

The victim was brought to the riverbank, where a medical officer from the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Beladin confirmed his passing. His remains were later sent to Betong Hospital for further examination, including a post-mortem.

DSP Rejali added that the case has been classified as sudden death (SDR) while investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.

He also urged the public not to speculate on the matter out of respect for the victim’s family and reminded everyone to remain sensitive when discussing the tragedy.

“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased who lost their loved one in this unfortunate incident,” he said.

The Beting Maro Carnival is an annual event that draws crowds from across the division to witness and take part in traditional river sports and cultural activities. However, this year’s regatta has now been overshadowed by the heartbreaking loss of a participant.

Authorities are expected to review safety measures for future events to prevent similar tragedies from happening.
