Benak Festival: Sri Aman’s Iconic Tidal Bore Event Boosts Tourism

SRI AMAN: The annual Benak Festival has grown into a vital tourism event for Sarawak, drawing visitors and boosting the local economy, especially in Sri Aman’s Simanggang town.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasized the festival’s importance in strengthening Sri Aman’s economy. Established in 1999, the event attracts both local and international tourists, showcasing Malaysia’s only tidal bore spectacle.

“This festival is a way to enhance the economy in Sri Aman. To our visitors from outside Sarawak and overseas, I warmly welcome you to Simanggang, home to this unique event,” Abang Johari said in a speech delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during the 2024 Sri Aman Benak Festival opening ceremony.

Tourism is a significant contributor to Sarawak’s economy, accounting for 7–8% of its revenue. Abang Johari highlighted the sector’s potential to further propel Sarawak’s economy toward 2030 and beyond.

“Sarawak received 3.92 million tourists last year, generating RM9.99 billion, equivalent to 7.11% of Sarawak’s total income. This year, from January to October, 3.98 million tourists have already contributed RM10.27 billion in revenue,” he said.

The festival not only promotes Sri Aman’s culture but also complements other local development efforts under the Sri Aman Development Agency (SADA).

With its growing popularity, the Benak Festival is a key event for showcasing Sarawak’s natural wonders and cultural heritage while bolstering Sri Aman’s reputation as a prime tourism destination.
