BETONG – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Betong, in collaboration with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, has carried out a flushing operation along Sungai Padeh and Sungai Layar in preparation for the upcoming Betong Mini Regatta 2026.
The operation, conducted over three days from 21 to 23 April, involved continuous monitoring and boat patrols along the designated race route.
The initiative was aimed at reducing the presence of wildlife in the river, particularly species that could pose risks to participants and spectators during the regatta.
Officials explained that the flushing activity was a proactive measure to ensure the safety of all involved in the event.
Personnel on duty patrolled key sections of the river to confirm that conditions were secure and under control.
By removing potential hazards, organisers hope to provide reassurance to competitors and visitors that safety remains a top priority.
The Betong Mini Regatta, scheduled to take place from 24 to 26 April 2026, is expected to attract participants and visitors from across the region.
The regatta is a popular community event, showcasing traditional boat racing and promoting local culture.
Ensuring safe conditions on the river is considered essential to the smooth running of the competition.
APM Betong highlighted that the operation reflects strong inter-agency cooperation, with the Civil Defence Force and Sarawak Forestry Corporation working closely to minimise risks.
The collaboration demonstrates the importance of preparedness in managing large-scale public events, particularly those involving natural environments.
Authorities emphasised that such measures are not only about immediate safety but also about building public confidence in the organisation of community events.
By taking preventive steps, organisers aim to ensure that the regatta can proceed without disruption, allowing participants to focus on competition and visitors to enjoy the festivities.
The flushing operation underscores the commitment of local agencies to safeguarding communities and supporting cultural traditions.
With safety measures in place, the Betong Mini Regatta is set to proceed as planned, reinforcing its role as a highlight of the district’s annual calendar.
