BETONG – The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Ir. Aidel Lariwoo, conducted an official working visit on 6 May 2026 to inspect progress at two major project sites under the Coastal Road and Second Main Road programme.
The first stop was Package B4, covering Jalan Lidong and the Betong Spur Road. Datuk Aidel was welcomed by Member of Parliament for P204 Betong, Dato Dr Richard Rapu @ Aman Anak Begri, and Assemblyman for N33 Engkilili, Dr Johnichal Rayong Ngipa.
A briefing was delivered by the concrete division engineer, outlining that the project has reached 77 percent completion.
The works involve constructing new road sections and upgrading existing stretches over 28 kilometres, built to JKR R5 standards.
Part of the route linking the Batang Lupar 2 Bridge to Lidong and Betong is expected to open in stages beginning August 2026.
The project is anticipated to improve connectivity, reduce travel time between Betong and Sri Aman, and stimulate local economic growth.
The Deputy Minister then proceeded to Package A5, which involves the Roban Interchange. He was received by Assemblyman for N38 Kalaka, Tuan Haji Mohamad Bin Duri, and Assemblyman for N39 Krian, Mr Friday Anak Belik.
This package includes the construction of a new interchange and a 28.5-kilometre road from Batang Saribas Bridge 2 to Roban Interchange, also built to JKR R5 standards.
Progress at the Roban Interchange project currently stands at 64 per cent. It is expected to open to traffic in December 2026, ahead of the contractual completion date.
Once operational, the route will provide a more efficient alternative for travel between Kuching, Sarikei and Sibu, reducing reliance on the Pan Borneo Highway.
The visit also included participation from Betong Division Resident Datu Richard Michael Abunawas, district office representatives and community leaders.
Their presence highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies and local stakeholders in ensuring the success of infrastructure projects.
These developments form part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to enhance road networks, improve accessibility and drive socioeconomic progress.
The Coastal Road and Second Main Road programme is seen as a catalyst for regional development, offering long-term benefits to communities across the state.
