BINTANGOR – The long-awaited renovation of the Bintangor Sports Complex is nearing completion, bringing modern facilities to the people of Meradong and fulfilling a long-standing request for improved sports infrastructure in the district.
Meradong assemblyman, Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, confirmed that the project was approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) with an allocation of RM2.5 million.
He noted that the proposal had been raised repeatedly in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) before finally receiving approval.
“Besides providing better facilities, the project is also a key to creating a younger generation who are active in sports,” he said, adding that the upgraded complex will serve as a hub for both recreational and competitive activities.
Datuk Ding expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Development (MYSED) for approving the funding, stressing that the project will benefit not only athletes but also the wider community.
He said the complex is expected to become a venue for quality sports programmes and events, encouraging greater participation across all age groups.
The renovation works, which began earlier this year, are scheduled for completion in November 2025. Among the new facilities being introduced are a Dutch circuit, football field, drainage system, long jump track, and high climb structure, all designed to expand the range of sports available to residents.
The Bintangor Sports Complex has long been a focal point for community activities in Meradong, but ageing facilities and limited amenities had restricted its use.
The current upgrade aims to address these shortcomings, ensuring that the complex can meet modern sporting standards and provide a safe, comfortable environment for users.
The project also reflects the state government’s broader commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure under the 12MP.
Similar initiatives have been rolled out across Sarawak to encourage youth development, promote healthy lifestyles, and support local sporting talent.
Datuk Ding expressed hope that the upgraded complex would inspire more young people to take up sports and foster a stronger sporting culture in Meradong.
He also highlighted the potential for the facility to host district-level competitions, which could further boost community engagement and local pride.
With the renovation nearing completion, residents of Meradong can look forward to a revitalised sports complex that not only provides modern facilities but also strengthens community ties through active participation in sports and recreation.
