BINTULU – Bintulu has been internationally recognised as a low-carbon industrial hub, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s transition towards sustainable development.
The recognition was conferred by the World Economic Forum, underscoring the state’s success in advancing green energy and environmentally responsible industries.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg highlighted the achievement while officiating the Bintulu Sarawakku Sayang (SKS) Programme on 23 May 2026.
He noted that Bintulu, once primarily associated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) production, is now entering a new phase of industrial transformation.
“The World Economic Forum recognises Bintulu Sarawak as a low-carbon industrial cluster. The world knows; it’s not just me who knows. The world knows how we can develop Bintulu as a low-carbon industrial area,” he said.
The Premier explained that Bintulu’s economic growth is no longer solely reliant on fossil fuels. Instead, the region is diversifying through investments in hydrogen energy, biomass-based renewable energy, solar power and semiconductor technology.
These sectors are expected to drive future economic expansion while reducing environmental impact. He further emphasised Bintulu’s role in Sarawak’s broader strategy to add value to its gas resources.
This includes producing high-value downstream products such as methanol, which strengthens the area’s position as a leading energy and petrochemical hub in Malaysia.
The recognition by the World Economic Forum is seen as validation of Sarawak’s green economy agenda, which aims to balance industrial progress with ecological sustainability.
By embracing renewable energy and advanced technology, Bintulu is positioning itself as a model for low-carbon industrial development in the region.
The Premier expressed confidence that Bintulu will continue to serve as a catalyst for Sarawak’s aspirations to lead in green innovation and advanced technology by 2030.
He stressed that the transformation is not only about economic growth but also about ensuring that development remains environmentally responsible and beneficial to future generations.
Observers note that the shift towards sustainable industries in Bintulu reflects global trends where governments and businesses are increasingly prioritising climate-conscious policies.
The recognition places Sarawak on the international stage as a forward-looking state committed to building a resilient and inclusive economy.
