MUKAH – A swift operation by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Mukah successfully removed a black cobra discovered inside a residential property.
On 13 May 2026, the District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) received an emergency call from the public reporting the presence of a snake under a living room chair.
The reptile was later identified as a black cobra measuring approximately 10 inches in length. Responding immediately, APM Mukah deployed its team to the scene.
Using pinning techniques and specialised equipment, the officers managed to capture the cobra without incident.
The situation was brought under control quickly, and no injuries were reported among residents or personnel.
Officials confirmed that the snake was safely secured and removed from the property. The operation was conducted under strict safety measures, ensuring that the household and surrounding area were declared safe before the team returned to base.
Wildlife experts note that cobras, though often small when first encountered, are venomous and can pose serious risks if disturbed.
Their presence in residential areas is usually linked to nearby vegetation or food sources, such as rodents. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid attempting to handle snakes themselves.
This case adds to a growing number of wildlife-related incidents across Sarawak, where snakes and other animals have increasingly entered populated areas.
Environmental changes and habitat disturbances are believed to be contributing factors, pushing wildlife closer to human settlements.
APM Mukah expressed appreciation to the public for promptly reporting the case. Officials stressed that community cooperation is vital in ensuring rapid response and preventing accidents.
Their operational motto, “Nang Steady”, reflects the unit’s commitment to readiness and reliability in safeguarding local communities.
Residents are reminded that in the event of wildlife encounters, contacting trained personnel is the safest option. APM Mukah operates a 24-hour hotline at 084-872-814, available for all emergency cases.
The agency continues to emphasise its message: “There’s a Disaster, Call APM,” underscoring the importance of immediate reporting in protecting lives and property.
