KUCHING – The 8th Borneo Sikh Games concluded last night with a colourful and heartfelt closing ceremony, graced by Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

In his address, Dr Sim highlighted that although the Sikh community in Sarawak may be small in number, they continue to be shining examples and an inspiration to all anak Sarawak in fostering community spirit and contributing to the state’s nation-building efforts.

“Heartiest congratulations to the Sikh community from Kuching, Miri, Brunei, Labuan and Kota Kinabalu for coming together not just for sports but also for cheering, laughing, competing, and strengthening bonds. You have shown the true spirit of unity and heritage which are the fundamental pillars of Sarawak nation building,” said Dr Sim.

The biennial event, which began in 2004 in Miri, is held in rotation among participating regions to promote cultural exchange and showcase the best of local hospitality. This year’s edition brought together more than 150 participants, ranging in age from as young as nine to as senior as 77, to compete in six games – badminton, futsal, bowling, tug-of-war, hockey, and volleyball.

For the Sikh community, the event was more than just a competition. It was a celebration of identity, culture, and sportsmanship, crossing generational lines and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The organising committee, largely made up of members of the Kuching Sikh Temple Association, was praised for their hard work and dedication. Dr Sim commended them for upholding the Sikh value of seva – service without expecting material rewards – not only through the successful hosting of the games but also in their continuous contribution to community welfare across generations.
