KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman, Chong Chieng Jen, has voiced concerns over the directive issued by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) instructing a gula apong ice-cream seller to cease trading at the Kuching Waterfront. The move, aimed at facilitating maintenance and cleaning works, has sparked a debate on the adequate support for local traders amidst developmental initiatives.

In a letter addressed to DBKU, Chong highlighted the plight of Liew Shien Ting, a licensed operator at the Kuching Waterfront bus stop kiosk. The letter, dated June 24, mandated Liew to vacate the premises by June 30, disrupting his trading activities despite having paid RM9,240 in full rental and license fees for the year.

Chong criticized the seven-day notice period provided by DBKU, asserting that such short timelines jeopardize Liew’s ability to sustain his livelihood. The sudden cessation of trading opportunities without alternative arrangements undermines the economic stability of local entrepreneurs.
