Chong Chieng Jen Seeks DBKU’s Clarification on Ice-Cream Seller’s Trading Halt Due to Kuching Waterfront Maintenance

DBKU’s Directive Puts Ice-Cream Seller’s Livelihood at Risk

KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman, Chong Chieng Jen, has voiced concerns over the directive issued by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) instructing a gula apong ice-cream seller to cease trading at the Kuching Waterfront. The move, aimed at facilitating maintenance and cleaning works, has sparked a debate on the adequate support for local traders amidst developmental initiatives.

Directive Challenges Livelihood Amidst Licensing Certainty

In a letter addressed to DBKU, Chong highlighted the plight of Liew Shien Ting, a licensed operator at the Kuching Waterfront bus stop kiosk. The letter, dated June 24, mandated Liew to vacate the premises by June 30, disrupting his trading activities despite having paid RM9,240 in full rental and license fees for the year.

Short Notice Spurs Public Outcry

Chong criticized the seven-day notice period provided by DBKU, asserting that such short timelines jeopardize Liew’s ability to sustain his livelihood. The sudden cessation of trading opportunities without alternative arrangements undermines the economic stability of local entrepreneurs.

Questions Raised Over Maintenance Scope and Duration

Expressing skepticism, Chong sought clarification on the nature and duration of the maintenance and cleaning works proposed by DBKU. Given the expansive nature of the waterfront area, he proposed phased maintenance to minimize disruption to traders and visitors alike.

Appeal for Temporary Trading Arrangements

Chong urged DBKU to consider allocating alternative trading spaces for Liew during the maintenance period. Emphasizing the popularity of Liew’s ice-cream kiosk as a tourist attraction and social media checkpoint, he underscored the economic and cultural value it adds to the waterfront ambiance.

Conclusion: Advocating for Fairness and Clarity

In conclusion, Chong appealed to DBKU for transparency and fairness in handling the situation. He called for a reconsideration of the directive’s impact on local businesses and urged DBKU to prioritize sustainable solutions that balance developmental needs with the livelihoods of Kuching’s entrepreneurial community.
