Christmas Parade in Sarikei Showcases Unity Amid Diversity

SARIKEI – Despite heavy rain, the Christmas parade in Sarikei drew enthusiastic participation from Christians and residents of diverse races and religions, reflecting the district’s enduring spirit of harmony.

The parade, which began at 7pm, featured decorated floats carrying messages of peace, goodwill, and the true meaning of Christmas.

The lively procession attracted crowds from Sarikei, Bintangor, and nearby districts, with many visitors capturing the festive atmosphere through photos and selfies as the floats passed through the bustling town centre.

Participants described the event as more than a celebration, highlighting its role in strengthening community ties. Joanna Umang, 24, said her involvement was a meaningful experience that reinforced togetherness.

“I am very grateful to be able to join this parade because it is not just a celebration of Christmas, but also a space to strengthen relationships between different races,” she shared.

Local resident Salimah Abu Bakar, 42, echoed similar sentiments, calling the parade a symbol of harmony across faiths.

“I always look forward to this program every year because it shows that the harmony and spirit of goodwill is still strong in Sarikei,” she said.

Visitors also travelled from outside the district to witness the event. Harryson Nyaong, 29, from Julau, attended with his family and expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

“I am very grateful to be able to witness this parade and hope that we all continue to live in an atmosphere of peace and prosperity,” he remarked.

Organised annually by St Anthony Catholic Church, the Christmas parade has become a cherished tradition in Sarikei, symbolising unity and inclusivity.

The event continues to serve as a reminder of the community’s commitment to celebrating diversity while fostering peace and goodwill.
