Church Urged to Strengthen Role in Building Community Harmony

BINTANGOR – Churches have been called upon to play a greater role in fostering community harmony and social well-being in Meradong and its surrounding areas. The appeal was made by Meradong Assemblyman (ADUN) Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing during the 3rd Anniversary Dinner of the Upper Central Sarawak Archdeaconry (UCSA) at St James’ Church on Friday.

Datuk Ding emphasised that churches are not only centres of worship but also platforms for social, welfare and spiritual activities that can strengthen bonds among residents. He noted that such initiatives contribute to both the faith of congregants and the overall well-being of the wider community.

I am confident that when the church, community leaders and the surrounding community work together, we can create a more united, peaceful and prosperous community,” he said.

The assemblyman also pledged his continued support for church-related initiatives, whether in the form of community programmes or infrastructure development. He commended the efforts of local churches in actively promoting harmony and inclusivity, describing them as vital to building a peaceful and prosperous society.

The event, attended by church leaders, parishioners and community representatives, highlighted the role of the Upper Central Sarawak Archdeaconry in strengthening unity through faith-based and social activities. The celebration also reflected the growing importance of churches in bridging communities across cultural and religious lines in Sarawak.

In recent years, churches in Bintangor and Meradong have been increasingly involved in outreach programmes, including charity drives, youth development activities and interfaith collaborations. These efforts have been recognised as contributing to social cohesion and mutual respect among diverse communities in the region.

Datuk Ding’s remarks also align with broader state initiatives that encourage religious institutions to complement government efforts in community development and social welfare. By working hand in hand with local leaders and civil society, churches are seen as playing a pivotal role in shaping a harmonious and resilient community fabric.

The anniversary dinner served not only as a celebration of the UCSA’s achievements, but also as a reminder of the shared responsibility between faith institutions, leaders and residents in nurturing unity and peace.
