Critical Fixes Arrive in August 2025 Google System Updates for Android 16

What’s new in Android’s August 2025 Google System Updates

In its August 2025 release, Google has rolled out critical system updates across Android devices, delivering major security patches and functional improvements. These updates address key vulnerabilities and bugs in Android 16 and core Google services.

Security Highlights

  • The update includes a critical fix for a so‑called “no‑touch” remote code execution vulnerability (CVE‑2025‑48530), which could allow attackers to hijack devices without any user interaction. Two additional high‑severity flaws—CVE‑2025‑22441 and CVE‑2025‑48533—are also patched.
  • Google’s Pixel Update Bulletin confirms that all supported Pixel devices will receive the August 5, 2025 security patch level, ensuring protection against all identified vulnerabilities.

Bug Fixes & Functional Improvements

  • The update corrects erratic behaviour affecting back button performance, both in gesture and three‑button navigation, that had been causing delays or unresponsiveness on Pixel 6 through Pixel 9 models.
  • Google also fixed problems with scheduled dark theme activation, which had previously failed to trigger at expected times.

Service‑Level Updates

  • Google Play Services v25.30, released August 4, introduces a new optional security question for Remote Lock, and adds easier access to password autofill via Google shortcut on Gboard.

Pixel Rollout Scope

This OTA build (BP2A.250805.005) is available now for all supported Pixel devices (Pixel 6/ 6 Pro/ 6a, 7/ 7 Pro/ 7a, Tablet, Fold, 8/ 8 Pro/ 8a, 9/ 9 Pro/ 9 Pro XL/ 9 Fold/ 9a) and rolling out regionally.

What Users Should Do

  • Install the update immediately on Pixel phones to block critical remote‑access exploits and restore reliable navigation/features.
  • Confirm patch level is 2025‑08‑05 or later via Settings > About phone > Android version.
  • Keep an eye on Play Services (v25.30) for the new Remote Lock option and autofill shortcuts.

Developer & Ecosystem Impact

  • Core services like Android System Intelligence, Adaptive Connectivity Services, WebView, TV Core Services, and Device Health Services were updated—though many enhancements may roll out gradually and initially remain behind flags.
  • Developers targeting upcoming Android 16 and API‑level compliance (target API 35) should note Google’s August 31 deadline for Play Store eligibility—apps must target within one year of the latest Android version.
