SHAH ALAM: A rare and shocking encounter unfolded last night at Pulau Ketam when local fishermen discovered a two-metre crocodile tangled in their fishing net. The 120-kg reptile was captured by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) after an emergency call was made.
Selangor assistant director of Operations, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, confirmed the incident, stating that the crocodile was found as the fishermen were repairing their nets. “We received an emergency call at 9.26 pm and immediately dispatched a team of nine personnel from the Port Klang Fire and Rescue Station to the scene,” he said in a statement today.
The operation to secure the crocodile went smoothly, and the reptile has since been handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan). Authorities estimate that the crocodile is around five years old.
This is reportedly the first time a crocodile has been encountered in Pulau Ketam, leaving the local community both astonished and cautious. The discovery has sparked conversations among locals, many of whom are concerned about the possibility of more crocodiles in the area.
Pulau Ketam, known for its serene fishing villages and vibrant seafood industry, is not a typical hotspot for crocodile sightings, making this encounter an unusual event. Perhilitan has assured residents and fishermen that they will closely monitor the area to prevent similar incidents.
For now, the crocodile’s capture serves as a reminder of the unpredictable wonders of nature and the importance of remaining vigilant when navigating Malaysia’s waterways.
