MIRI – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has partnered with the Miri Dayak Association (DAM) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance indigenous community-based learning, cultural appreciation, and inclusive development initiatives.
The MoU was signed by Professor Vincent Lee, Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and CEO of Curtin Malaysia, alongside Penghulu Wilfred Mac, President of DAM.
The agreement sets out collaboration in integrated work-based learning, student and staff development, joint projects, community engagement, and the sharing of indigenous knowledge.
The partnership reflects mutual respect between academia and the community, aligning with Curtin Malaysia’s role as a Sarawak Government-owned university committed to social development, cultural preservation, and inclusive growth, especially for indigenous communities.
DAM welcomed the collaboration, describing it as a step toward empowering cultural participation and creating sustainable impact. The association highlighted that the initiative will strengthen the community’s role in knowledge-based development and education.
Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business noted that the MoU demonstrates a commitment to shared learning and inclusive development, supporting efforts to enhance business literacy, skills, and entrepreneurship among indigenous communities.
Students will have opportunities to engage directly with the Dayak community through field visits and collaborative activities, promoting mutual understanding and cultural exchange.
The signing ceremony was attended by DAM representatives, including Counsellor Abin Galieh, Vice President Vivienne Nyut Nasat, and Jaqueline Selaka, alongside Curtin Malaysia’s academic and leadership team.
This strategic partnership is expected to provide a sustainable platform for strengthening university-community relations, preserving cultural heritage, and contributing to the development of inclusive human capital in Sarawak.
