MUKAH: Minister in Sarawak’s Premier Department, Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai, has expressed his deep sympathy for the victims of a devastating fire that struck Rumah Nyawin Radin, Sungai Duan, Balingian on 18 February 2025.

The fire, which broke out around 7.10 pm, caused severe damage to 70 to 80 per cent of the longhouse structure, affecting all eight doors. The incident has left many residents without shelter and in urgent need of assistance.

Upon receiving the news, Dato Sri John Sikie made an immediate visit to the affected site on Wednesday to assess the situation and provide aid. During his visit, he announced financial assistance of RM1,000 per door, bringing the total donation to RM8,000. This contribution aims to help the victims rebuild their lives after the disaster.

In addition to financial support, Dato Sri John Sikie urged all affected residents to promptly report their losses to the Mukah District Office, Police, Social Welfare Department (JKM), and the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM). This step is crucial to ensure that emergency relief and further assistance can be distributed in an organized manner.

The visit, which lasted about an hour, allowed Dato Sri John Sikie to listen to the victims’ concerns and provide moral support. His presence reassured the residents that they are not alone in this difficult time.

Also present during the visit were Mukah District Office Chief Jeffery Irut, Chief Nelson Chuat, and the Head of the UN Branch Kakus, Nelson Mujah Girie.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, and efforts are underway to provide further assistance to those affected.
