KUCHING – After 15 years of dedicated service, Dato Wee Hong Seng officially stepped down as President of the Amateur Swimming Association of Sarawak (ASAS) during its recent Annual General Meeting, marking the end of a leadership era that transformed Sarawak’s swimming landscape.
In an emotional farewell address, Dato Wee reflected on his journey, which began with a vision to build not just a sporting organisation, but a community rooted in discipline, passion, and integrity.
“Fifteen years ago, I joined the association with the intention of building not just a sporting body but a community—driven by discipline, passion, integrity, and a love for swimming,” he said.
He highlighted the association’s evolution into a respected state-level governing body, coordinating the work of all divisional swimming associations across Sarawak. Under his leadership, ASAS streamlined competition structures, enhanced athlete selection systems, and forged strong partnerships with government agencies including the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development and the Sarawak Department of Youth and Sports.
One of the proudest milestones, Dato Wee noted, was Sarawak’s consistent medal contributions at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA)—a testament to the effectiveness of early talent identification, structured training, and long-term unity among coaches, parents, and athletes.
“At every SUKMA, our swimmers have delivered gold medals and made Sarawak proud—not by chance, but through hard work and unity,” he said.
Turning his attention to the newly elected ASAS committee, Dato Wee urged them to uphold the association’s legacy and remain focused on the athletes’ welfare above all else.
“You carry the name and progress of Sarawak. Protect our athletes. Listen to them. Stand up for their welfare. Let compassion and wisdom guide your leadership,” he said.
He reminded them that every decision moving forward would define the next chapter of Sarawak swimming, and that personal interests must never overshadow the mission of developing athletes and fostering excellence.
