“If Bintulu has its Golden Gate, then Kuching now has its own ‘Rotterdam’ – this bridge. It’s not just an ordinary bridge. It’s a modern engineering landmark and a symbol of the transformation from a traditional village area into a smart urban zone,” he said during the official launch held at Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol on Tuesday night.

Named after the late Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, the bridge honours her contributions and legacy. According to the Premier, the bridge is a tribute to love, heritage, and the community’s shared journey toward urban progress.

He described the structure as an “engineering masterpiece,” showcasing Sarawak’s ability to deliver infrastructure of international standards, while incorporating unique architectural design.

During the event, the Premier also revealed a new development plan for the area known as “Padang Pasir,” strategically located next to Masjid Bintangor Ajibah Abol.

“Just like Kuala Lumpur has KL Sentral, Kuching will soon have Kuching Sentral – the main transport hub for our Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system,” he said, explaining that the former vegetable market site will be transformed into a modern integrated development and transit hub.

He drew comparisons to the successful urban renewal of East Perth in Australia, where old riverbank areas were turned into attractive modern suburbs through careful use of river and bridge infrastructure.

“We have the Bintangor River, we have the dock, we have the waterfront – if they can do it, so can we,” he added confidently.

The Premier also assured residents that future developments will protect land ownership and local identity. New apartment units will be introduced, allowing residents to own more valuable, competitive properties without losing their heritage rights.

“Assets will remain with the people. We’re simply introducing a new way to develop land, without taking away ownership,” he stressed.

Also present were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, members of the Sarawak Cabinet, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister of Utilities (Sarawak Energy & PETROS) and Satok assemblyman Dato Ibrahim Baki, along with other dignitaries and invited guests. — UKAS EDITION
