DBKU Road Barrier in Kuching Triggers Public Complaint Over Access Issue

DBKU Road Barrier in Kuching Triggers Public Complaint Over Access Issue

KUCHING – A road barrier set up by the Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU) during the “Car Free Sunday” event has caused public anger after a local resident was stopped from entering Plaza Aurora, Jalan McDougall.

The incident happened around 8.00am when the resident tried to go into the building for work. According to the complaint, the only access road to the building was fully blocked by the barrier placed for the city’s weekly road closure programme.

The resident said they tried to speak politely with the officers on duty. They also suggested moving the barrier slightly so vehicles could still enter and leave the building. However, the request was not accepted. The resident also claimed they were spoken to in a harsh manner by the staff at the location.

The complainant further said this is not the first time such a problem has happened. In September 2025, a similar issue involving road barriers in the same area had gone viral on social media. At that time, DBKU had reportedly admitted there were weaknesses in their management and promised improvements.

However, the resident said the same problem is still happening again, nearly a year later. This has led to frustration among some members of the public, who feel that there has been no real change in how road closures are managed.

The complainant also raised concerns about possible unfair treatment. They claimed that while they were asked to repeatedly lower their car window to communicate, other vehicles were allowed through with less checking. These claims have not been independently verified.

Feeling unhappy with the situation, the resident has lodged a police report and plans to send an official complaint letter to DBKU headquarters. The complaint calls for better planning of road closures, clearer communication with the public, and improved attitude from staff on duty.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns about how road closures are handled during public events in Kuching. Members of the public are now urging authorities to improve coordination so that daily work and business activities are not disrupted.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the latest complaint.
