Beginning in 2025, the DBKU City Library introduced posters and visual displays in schools across Kuching North, highlighting the National Flower, the Sarawak State Flower, and DBKU’s Official Flower.

The initiative aims to provide students with early exposure to symbols that embody national and state pride.

By presenting these flowers in a visually engaging format, DBKU hopes to encourage students not only to recognise the blooms but also to understand their historical significance and cultural symbolism.

According to DBKU, schools are the most effective platform for shaping a knowledgeable society. The initiative is designed to instil patriotism, reinforce identity, and raise awareness about the importance of preserving local heritage and natural treasures.

Officials believe that introducing these symbols in classrooms will help students appreciate their cultural roots in a more interactive and relaxed learning environment.

The National Flower, the hibiscus, has long been a symbol of Malaysia’s resilience and unity, while Sarawak’s State Flower, the Normah Orchid, represents the state’s unique biodiversity and cultural richness.

DBKU’s Official Flower, the Torch Ginger, reflects the city’s vibrancy and growth. Together, these flowers serve as reminders of identity and pride, linking communities to their heritage.

Educational experts note that visual learning methods, such as posters and images, are effective in engaging students.

By incorporating cultural symbols into everyday school settings, DBKU is fostering a sense of belonging and encouraging students to value their environment. This approach also aligns with broader efforts to integrate heritage education into the curriculum.

DBKU has emphasised that this programme is not a one-off effort but part of a long-term strategy to nurture civic pride and knowledge.

The City Hall intends to continue planning educational activities that highlight Sarawak’s heritage, identity, and environment, ensuring that future generations grow up with a strong sense of cultural awareness.
