KUCHING – The North Kuching City Hall, widely recognised by its Malay acronym DBKU, has successfully finalised the installation of intelligent street lighting across the Kampung Rampangi area.

UDC Event 2026

This milestone marks a significant advancement in the local authority’s ongoing efforts to modernise urban infrastructure and elevate the standard of living for residents.

The initiative, encompassing both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the neighbourhood’s development, saw the deployment of exactly three hundred smart lighting units.

These installations were fully operational and officially handed over by the close of 2025, representing a major step forward in the region’s technological integration and municipal planning.

The completion of this critical infrastructure upgrade was officially acknowledged by Yang Berhormat Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Junaidi.

Serving as the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, he also holds the pivotal role of Project Coordinator for the Regional Development Agency, DBKU, and Islamic Affairs.

His direct involvement underscores the state government’s dedication to synchronising local municipal projects with broader regional development goals.

This intelligent lighting network forms a cornerstone of the wider Kampung Rampangi Beautification Project.

The overarching programme is meticulously designed to deliver safer, higher-quality public amenities through the strategic application of modern, sustainable technology.

By transitioning away from conventional illumination, the city hall aims to foster a more secure and comfortable environment for the local community.

Smart street lighting systems offer substantial, measurable advantages over traditional setups. They typically incorporate advanced motion sensors and adaptive dimming capabilities, which significantly reduce energy consumption during quiet, off-peak hours.

This intelligent regulation not only lowers the municipal carbon footprint but also translates to considerable long-term cost savings for the local authority, freeing up funds for other essential community services.

Furthermore, enhanced visibility along residential pathways and main thoroughfares directly contributes to public safety.

Well-lit streets are a proven deterrent to opportunistic crime and drastically reduce the likelihood of traffic accidents during nighttime hours.

Residents can expect a more reassuring and welcoming atmosphere when travelling after dark, aligning perfectly with the city’s vision of a people-centric urban landscape.

The successful rollout in Kampung Rampangi also reflects DBKU’s broader, unwavering commitment to the smart city agenda.

This aligns with the wider Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy, which emphasises the use of technology to improve governance and public service delivery.

Similar technological upgrades have been observed in other parts of the city, indicating a systematic, well-coordinated approach to urban renewal.

From a technical perspective, the newly installed units utilise high-efficiency light-emitting diode technology.

This hardware is inherently more durable and consumes a fraction of the electricity required by older sodium-vapour lamps.

Coupled with remote monitoring software, municipal engineers can now diagnose faults in real time, ensuring that maintenance crews are dispatched promptly to address any outages.

This proactive approach to maintenance minimises the duration of dark spots within the neighbourhood, thereby sustaining a consistent level of security.

The shift towards data-driven facility management represents a paradigm change in how the city hall operates, moving away from reactive repairs to predictive, preventative upkeep.

Moreover, the project aligns with DBKU’s recent pursuits in achieving recognised energy management standards.

The local authority has been actively benchmarking its operations against international best practices, seeking to formalise its commitment to sustainability.

The Rampangi initiative serves as a practical demonstration of these institutional goals being realised on the ground.

Local residents are expected to notice an immediate improvement in the nocturnal ambiance of their surroundings.

The brighter, more uniform illumination eliminates hazardous shadows, making evening walks and late-night commutes considerably safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Such enhancements are vital for fostering a vibrant, active community that feels secure at all hours. As the neighbourhood begins to enjoy the tangible benefits of this upgraded network, attention may soon turn to subsequent phases of urban enhancement.

The seamless execution of the current project sets a strong, reliable precedent for future municipal undertakings, proving that strategic investments in smart technology yield genuine, lasting improvements in civic life.

Ultimately, this development reinforces the collaborative effort between state leadership and local governance.

It highlights a shared, unified vision where technological progress is harnessed not merely for modernisation’s sake, but to genuinely uplift the daily experiences and well-being of the people residing in these rapidly evolving communities.
