Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, announced the initiative during the Borneo International Water & Wastewater Exhibition and Conference (BIWWEC) 2026. He emphasised that the inclusion of Orkid water on Air Borneo flights reflects Sarawak’s distinct identity and showcases the state’s natural resources in a unique way.

“Today, I have the honour to launch Sarawak Water’s new product, the Orkid brand water, and this water will be used in Air Borneo. So, our aircraft will be different from others because it uses natural water from Sarawak,” the Premier said when speaking to the media after the event.

The Premier highlighted that water is not only a basic necessity but also a resource with significant economic potential. By harnessing modern technology, Sarawak aims to transform its water sector into a driver of innovation and value creation. He noted that water can be developed into high-value products, contributing to the state’s economic growth and sustainability.

Beyond bottled water, Sarawak is exploring diverse applications of its water resources. The Premier pointed to ongoing initiatives such as hydrogen production, which forms part of the state’s broader strategy to leverage water for renewable energy development. This approach, he explained, represents a holistic vision for resource management, combining innovation, technology, and sustainability.

The Orkid brand is expected to strengthen Sarawak’s presence in the consumer market while promoting the state’s image internationally. By partnering with Air Borneo, the product will reach travellers from different regions, offering them a taste of Sarawak’s natural water during their journey.

Sarawak Water’s expansion into branded products reflects the government’s commitment to diversifying the state’s economy. The Premier stressed that the water sector will continue to focus on modernisation, efficiency, and sustainability, ensuring that resources are optimally utilised for the benefit of future generations.

Industry observers note that the launch of Orkid water aligns with global trends in promoting local products through strategic partnerships. Airlines often serve regional brands to highlight cultural identity and support local industries. Air Borneo’s adoption of Orkid water is seen as a step towards enhancing passenger experience while strengthening Sarawak’s economic footprint.

The Premier’s announcement at BIWWEC 2026 also underscored Sarawak’s ambition to position itself as a leader in water resource innovation. The conference provided a platform for industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to exchange ideas on sustainable water management and technological advancements. Sarawak’s showcase of Orkid water highlighted the state’s proactive approach in turning natural resources into economic opportunities.

As Sarawak continues to modernise its water sector, initiatives such as Orkid water and hydrogen production demonstrate the state’s commitment to innovation. These efforts are expected to contribute to Sarawak’s long-term development agenda, ensuring that water resources are managed responsibly while delivering economic and social benefits.

The introduction of Orkid water on Air Borneo flights symbolises more than just a product launch; it represents Sarawak’s vision of integrating local identity with global exposure. By combining sustainability with innovation, the state is charting a path towards a future where its natural resources are not only preserved but also celebrated.
