Sabah Immigration Returned 260 Illegal Foreign Nationals to Home Countries

KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah State Immigration Department has carried out a repatriation programme involving 260 Filipino nationals detained at immigration depots across the state. The detainees were transferred via Lahad Datu Port to Bongao Port, Tawi-Tawi in the Philippines on a commercial ferry.

The group comprised 167 adult men, 40 adult women, 30 boys, and 23 girls, ranging in age from just five days old to 68 years. Children were accompanied by their parents or guardians during the journey, ensuring family units remained together throughout the process.

This latest operation forms part of Sabah’s ongoing efforts to return foreign nationals who have completed their sentences under Malaysian law. The Immigration Department confirmed that all detainees possessed valid travel documents, qualifying them for repatriation.

Earlier this week, on 14 July, five Chinese nationals were deported via air transfer from Kota Kinabalu International Airport to Guangzhou, China. The group, all adult men, had been detained at the Papar Immigration Depot. Similarly, on 10 July, five Pakistani men were repatriated from Tawau Immigration Depot to Lahore, Pakistan, transiting through Kuala Lumpur International Airport under the escort of immigration officers.

To date, Sabah has repatriated 2,838 Filipino nationals, 1,207 Indonesians, 105 Pakistanis, and 89 Chinese citizens, amounting to a total of 4,275 foreign detainees. These figures reflect the state’s continued enforcement of immigration laws and its commitment to managing illegal entry.

The Immigration Department stressed that the repatriation programme is not only a legal requirement but also a measure to safeguard community welfare. Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid harbouring or employing illegal immigrants.

In a statement, the department encouraged residents to report suspicious activities through official channels, including the Public Complaints Management System (SISPAA) portal at https://spab.gov.my or the Online Enquiry System (SPO). These platforms provide accessible means for citizens to support enforcement efforts.

Sabah’s immigration enforcement has long been a critical issue due to its geographical proximity to neighbouring countries and the high volume of cross-border movement. The state continues to face challenges in managing undocumented arrivals, particularly from the Philippines and Indonesia.

Officials emphasise that the repatriation programme is part of a broader strategy to uphold national security, maintain social stability, and ensure compliance with immigration laws. By systematically returning detainees to their countries of origin, Malaysia seeks to reduce the burden on detention facilities and reinforce lawful migration practices.

Community leaders have welcomed the initiative, noting that it helps address concerns over illegal employment and social integration. The programme also reflects Malaysia’s commitment to international cooperation, ensuring that repatriations are conducted in accordance with legal and humanitarian standards.

As Sabah continues to strengthen its immigration enforcement, the department reiterated its call for public cooperation. Authorities believe that community awareness and active reporting are essential in curbing illegal immigration and protecting the welfare of local residents.
