BETONG – The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak organised an Environmental Awareness Programme with the local community in Debak, Betong, on 7 May 2026, aiming to strengthen cooperation and knowledge-sharing in environmental preservation.
The event, held at the Debak Subdistrict Unity Hall, was officiated by Ts. Jefrin Johnny Gutuk @ Mohd Jefrin Azlan Abdullah, Head of the Betong Division NREB Office, representing Sarawak Environmental Quality Controller, Datu Jack anak Liam.
Also present was Assistant Administrative Officer of the Debak Subdistrict Office, Encik Mohammad Khairurani bin Mohammad Ibrahim.
The programme featured a series of activities designed to raise awareness and encourage community participation.
NREB delivered a talk highlighting shared responsibility in tackling open burning, domestic waste management, and promoting circular economy practices.
CENTEXS Betong conducted a session on compost production methods, while the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) presented a briefing titled “3M Buaya”. The Betong Fire and Rescue Department followed with a fire safety demonstration.
Health screenings were provided by the Debak District Health Department, while Timuran Kembangan Sdn. Bhd. facilitated the collection of used cooking oil.
Interactive exhibitions were also staged by NREB, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), and the Sarawak Information Development Centre (SIDC). To further engage participants, lucky draw activities were held throughout the day.
Support for the programme came from multiple agencies and organisations, including the Debak District Office, Betong Health Department, Betong Fire and Rescue Department, Sarawak Forestry Corporation, CENTEXS Betong, Timuran Kembangan Sdn. Bhd., and FELCRA Berhad.
The initiative underscored the importance of collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions, and local communities in addressing environmental challenges.
By combining awareness campaigns with practical demonstrations, the programme aimed to instil sustainable practices and encourage active participation in protecting Sarawak’s natural resources.
Community members welcomed the programme as an opportunity to learn, engage, and contribute to environmental stewardship.
The event highlighted how grassroots involvement, supported by institutional expertise, can create lasting impact in promoting sustainability and resilience at the local level.
