The Economic Census, conducted every five years, is among Malaysia’s most significant statistical undertakings. It gathers detailed data on businesses from all sectors, providing key information to measure economic performance and shape development policies.

During the fieldwork, DOSM officers engaged with traders and business owners to collect data on their operations, workforce, and finances. The goal is to capture the heartbeat of Malaysia’s grassroots economy and provide policymakers with an accurate reflection of business realities.

Officials shared that the census will run from January to October 2026, covering sectors such as retail, services, manufacturing, and agriculture. The findings will help measure sectoral contributions to Malaysia’s GDP, identify potential growth areas, and address challenges that require policy support.

This initiative demonstrates DOSM’s dedication to advancing data-driven governance. By conducting fieldwork at community hubs like Stutong Market, the department ensures inclusivity by representing both small traders and larger enterprises.

Local traders and residents welcomed the census, acknowledging that reliable data is vital in shaping effective policies to support small businesses and improve livelihoods. DOSM reaffirmed that “Data is the heart of the people’s economy,” highlighting the importance of statistics in driving sustainable and equitable growth.

As Malaysia advances toward a digital and knowledge-based economy, the census is expected to play a crucial role in guiding strategies for innovation, competitiveness, and long-term economic resilience.
