Dr Annuar Sibu Ideal Spot for Sarawak’s Long-Awaited Cancer Centre

Dr Annuar: Sibu Ideal Spot for Sarawak’s Long-Awaited Cancer Centre

SIBU (Jan 20): Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, has proposed that Sibu be the site for the long-awaited cancer centre, citing its central location as a key advantage.

During the 22nd Anniversary Dinner of Rejang Medical Centre (RMC) last night, Dr Annuar highlighted that Sibu’s strategic position within Sarawak would provide greater accessibility to patients across the state.

“Some may not agree with my opinion, but this is based on logistics. Sibu is in the middle of Sarawak, making it the most convenient location for such a centre. Cancer treatments require frequent follow-ups, and a central location can help reduce the travel burden and expenses for patients,” he explained.

Dr Annuar, who is also the Nangka assemblyman, further emphasised the need for the government to collaborate with private hospitals to enhance healthcare services in Sarawak.

“In my view, it is challenging for the government to deliver quality healthcare without support from the private sector. This partnership can provide better equipment and improved facilities, ensuring that the public benefits from upgraded healthcare services,” he said.

Dr Annuar also expressed optimism about the future of healthcare in Sibu, mentioning the upcoming cardiac unit at RMC. He praised RMC for its efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic, such as conducting polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and mass vaccination campaigns.

Among the notable attendees at the event were Senator Robert Lau, Sibu Division Health Officer Dr Teh Jo Hun, Sibu Hospital Director Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu, and RMC board chairman Dr Lau Ngi Chuang.

This proposal brings hope for better healthcare access in Sarawak, particularly for cancer patients who require continuous treatment and care.
