KUCHING – The Forest Department Sarawak marked Earth Day with a special programme for young children at the Industrial Forest Research Centre (IFRC) Semengoh, welcoming 45 kindergarten pupils and 14 teachers from Tadika Bahagia on 23 April 2026.
The initiative was designed to nurture environmental awareness among children aged four to six through play-based learning and hands-on activities.
The programme began with a demonstration on seedling planting techniques by Dr Pang Shek Ling and the IFRC team.
The children then enthusiastically planted seedlings in polybags, each naming their plant to create a personal connection with nature.
Beyond tree planting, the children participated in a leaf stamping activity, producing creative artwork using natural leaves.
Organisers explained that such activities encourage exploration of the environment in imaginative ways, helping children to build a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Forest Department Sarawak expressed gratitude to Tadika Bahagia for its involvement, noting that early exposure to environmental education is vital in shaping future generations of responsible stewards.
Officials emphasised that instilling values of care and protection for nature at a young age contributes to long-term sustainability.
Earth Day, observed globally on 22 April, serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation and the need to safeguard forests and ecosystems.
The programme at IFRC Semengoh highlighted how experiential learning can inspire children to take pride in protecting the environment.
Teachers accompanying the children praised the initiative, noting that the combination of fun and education made the experience memorable.
Parents also welcomed the programme, recognising its role in instilling positive values and awareness of environmental responsibility.
The Forest Department reaffirmed its commitment to continuing similar initiatives, aiming to expand outreach to schools and communities across Sarawak.
By engaging children in meaningful activities, the department hopes to cultivate a generation that values ecological balance and contributes to a greener future.
